Trekking route: Almaty – Shymbulak resort – Left Talgar valley – TEU pass – Shokalski glacier – Aktau peak – TEU pass – Left Talgar valley – Shymbulak – Almaty.

It’s hiking alpinism in crampons, not technical!

Alpinism level – F

The route passes through one of the largest glaciers of the Trans-Ili Alatau ridge: Korzhenevski (9 km) and Shokalski (5 km). The Korzhenevsky glacier was opened in 1903 by the russian researcher S. E. Dmitriev who passed here with the Kazakh expert of these places Turar Ryskulov from Issyk village. Dmitriev discovered most of the other glaciers of Almaty mountains in 1902-1910 years. Huge number of snow-white peaks will make you feel that you are in Antarctica.  From Aktau you can sea the highest point of the Northern Tien Shan is the Talgar peak, 5017 m. It will be only 3 km away!!!

Programme

Day 1. Transfer to the Medeu (30 min). Cablecar. Medeu-Shymbulak-Talgarsky pass 3.165 m (1 h). Trekking. Left Talgar gorge – Red glade – Alpine Rose glade – cross river on rope – Nauruksai gorge.

Distance 10 km; 7-8 hrs. Difference in height -965 m / +600 m (3165-2250-2850 m).

Day 2. TEU pass – glacier – Middle Talgar valley – moraine under Shokalski glacier.

Distance 11 km; 8-9 hrs. Difference in height +1400 m / -750 m (2850-4040-3320-3520 m).

Day 3. Climbing. Shokalski glacier – traverse Bivachnyi and Surovyi passes – Korzhenevski glacier – Aktau peak. Back – same way.

Distance 13 km; 10-12 hrs. Difference in height +1300 m / -1300 m (3520-4530-4450-4664-3520 m).

Day 4. TEU pass – Nauruksai gorge.

Distance 11 km; 6-7 hrs. Difference in height +750 m / -1400 m (3520-3320-4040-2850 m).

Day 5. Cross river – Left Talgar – Talgar pass. Cablecar. Talgarsky pass – Medeu (1 h). Transfer to Almaty city (30 min).

Distance 10 km; 7-8 hrs. Difference in height -600 m / +965 m (2850-2250-3163 m).

Day 6. Emergency.
